Sam Gilliam

Sam Gilliam was an American abstract painter, sculptor, and arts educator. He was born in Mississippi, raised in Kentucky, and spent his adult life in Washington, D.C., where he was considered a leading figure in the arts community. Originally associated with the Washington Color School, Gilliam expanded his artistic style in the mid-1960s by incorporating process and sculptural elements into his paintings.
