La Boverie to Present Sophie Langohr’s ‘Paysages sans figures’ in Liège

La Boverie in Liège will present ‘Paysages sans figures’, a selection of works by Sophie Langohr made from paintings held by the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Liège. The exhibition will be installed in the avenue leading to the museum’s permanent collections and will run from 3 to 13 September 2026. Admission will be free.

According to La Boverie’s announcement, Langohr revisits works from the collection through different processes of “refabrication”—re-making or reconstructing existing images. The resulting works alter the status of the paintings on which they are based, redirecting and subverting them so that they can “speak differently.” The presentation therefore places a contemporary artistic intervention directly alongside the route into the museum’s permanent holdings.

The exhibition’s title, ‘Paysages sans figures’, identifies landscape as its central field of reference while suggesting an approach that removes or questions the human presence traditionally associated with the genre. The available information does not specify the full number of works in the selection or identify all of the historical paintings used by Langohr. It does, however, establish that the series is drawn from paintings belonging to the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Liège collection.

One work identified in the museum’s promotional material is ‘Paysage sans figures 1 (Après H-J Antonissen, Troupeau dans un paysage, 1790, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Liège / La Boverie, Ville de Liège)’. The piece is described as a 2026 colour photograph mounted on dibond. Its title directly names the earlier landscape by H-J Antonissen that provided its source, making the relationship between the historical collection object and Langohr’s reworked image explicit.

La Boverie presents the project within its wider role as a museum displaying the collections of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Liège. Its programme also includes temporary exhibitions and presentations by contemporary artists, allowing works connected to the city’s holdings to be encountered before visitors reach the permanent galleries. In ‘Paysages sans figures’, that passage becomes the setting for a sequence of transformations based on the museum’s own art-historical resources.

The exhibition forms part of La Boverie’s September 2026 programme, which includes the twelfth edition of ‘En Piste !’, a free presentation of contemporary art from the Liège region, scheduled for 4–13 September. The museum’s announcement lists Langohr’s project separately, with an opening date one day earlier, and specifies that ‘Paysages sans figures’ will remain on view through 13 September. It will be accessible free of charge from 3 to 13 September 2026.
