Victoria Sambunaris’s photographic exhibition ‘Altered Lands’ will open on September 13 at The Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, where it will remain on view through May 2, 2027. The exhibition is organized in partnership with Silver Eye Center for Photography in Pittsburgh.
For more than 25 years, Sambunaris has traveled across the United States photographing landscapes shaped by human incursions into the natural world. The exhibition presents that sustained engagement with altered environments through contemporary landscape photography, focusing on places where development, infrastructure and other forms of intervention have changed the terrain.
The Westmoreland is presenting ‘Altered Lands’ in dialogue with ‘Ansel Adams: Majestic Lands,’ which opens on the same day and runs through the same closing date. The pairing places Sambunaris’s examination of transformed landscapes alongside more than 40 works by Adams, including selections from the ‘Museum Set,’ a group of photographs Adams himself selected late in life as his best works.
The two exhibitions are ticketed, although general admission to the museum remains free. Admission to each exhibition is listed at $10 for adults and $5 for children, with free entry for museum members. The Westmoreland Museum of American Art is located at 221 North Main Street in Greensburg.
The museum describes its collection as American art with a strong focus on artists and art from Southwestern Pennsylvania. Its current and upcoming programme includes exhibitions devoted to the American landscape, regional industrial history, self-taught artists and contemporary practitioners, placing Sambunaris’s project within a broader schedule that moves between historical and present-day views of place.
A members-only opening for ‘Ansel Adams: Majestic Lands’ and ‘Victoria Sambunaris: Altered Lands’ is scheduled for September 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. A free public panel, ‘Perspectives on Photography,’ will follow on September 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. The Westmoreland is open Wednesday through Sunday, with regular hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; on Fridays from September through May, the museum’s listed hours are noon to 8 p.m.
