Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea will present ‘Giorgio Griffa: 90’ from 27 March 2026, marking the Turin painter’s 90th birthday with a presentation spanning works from the 1970s to the present. The project will be developed in collaboration with Fondazione Giorgio Griffa in Turin and will include documentary material and tools from the artist’s studio alongside the paintings.
The exhibition will focus on Griffa’s sustained investigation of painting through what the museum describes as a radical language reduced to the essential elements of canvas, colour and mark. Rather than presenting a conventional chronological account, the selection is intended to testify to the length and continuity of an artistic career described by the institution as long, prolific and uninterrupted.
Griffa, born in Turin in 1936, has characterised his practice with the statement, “Io non rappresento nulla, io dipingo” (“I do not represent anything, I paint”). The remark, quoted by Castello di Rivoli, reflects the emphasis placed on the material and procedural dimensions of his work: the physical surface, the application of colour and the autonomy of the painted sign.
The project originated with the CRRI – Centro di Ricerca del Castello di Rivoli, which has initiated the inclusion of archival and studio material in the presentation. These documents and working tools will extend the exhibition beyond finished artworks, offering material evidence of the conditions and processes surrounding Griffa’s practice. The museum’s announcement does not specify the number of works or an end date for the exhibition.
‘Giorgio Griffa: 90’ forms part of Castello di Rivoli’s 2026 programme, which also includes new presentations of its permanent collection. The museum has announced a multi-phase reinstallation centred on Arte Povera, with monographic galleries devoted to pioneers of the movement and works of historical significance; additional spring displays will address other major figures in Italian art. The Griffa project is presented separately from that collection reinstallation as an anniversary tribute.
The collaboration with Fondazione Giorgio Griffa will continue beyond the Castello di Rivoli presentation. In April 2026, the Turin foundation is scheduled to hold ‘Summer 69’, an exhibition focused on the artist’s beginnings. At Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea in Rivoli, ‘Giorgio Griffa: 90’ opens on 27 March 2026 and remains on view until a date to be announced.
