A new collaborative installation by Danish artist Nina Beier and American artist John Miller is on view at ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum, where it transforms the museum’s underground Salling Galleri into an environment shaped by questions of identity, authenticity and representation. Titled ‘The Populace’, the exhibition runs from 14 May 2026 through 29 March 2027 in Aarhus, Denmark.
The installation brings together a large number of staged mannequins and photographs of portrait paintings recovered from forgotten archives. According to ARoS, the arrangement creates a space that is simultaneously familiar and strange, with the mannequins, painted faces and visitors placed within a shifting network of mutual gazes.
The work unsettles distinctions between people and objects, portraits and persons, and originals and reproductions. The mannequins appear neither entirely human nor entirely object-like, while the archival images introduce another layer of uncertainty: the figures depicted in the paintings are presented through photographic reproductions rather than as directly encountered originals.
ARoS describes ‘The Populace’ as an exploration of the cultural codes and structures that shape contemporary life. The installation moves between the traditions of portraiture, consumer culture and the hierarchies embedded in acts of looking. Its atmosphere is described as both intimate and alienating, personal and generic, creating a setting in which the status of an original or a copy remains unstable.
The exhibition is curated by Signe Melgaard Mark. The museum’s listing identifies support from the Ny Carlsberg Foundation, 15. Juni Fonden, Kemp & Lauritzen’s Foundation, Lemvigh-Müller Fonden, Konsul George Jorcks and wife Emma Jorck’s Foundation, and the Danish Arts Foundation. The exhibition is accompanied by public programmes at ARoS. A family tour, ‘Børnetimen – The Populace’, is scheduled for 5 September 2026 from 10:30 to 11:15, while a Sunday tour introducing the site-specific exhibition will take place on 20 September from 15:00 to 15:45. The museum lists both events as taking place at ARoS, with admission to the museum required unless visitors hold an annual pass.
