Glada Hudik Theatre to Present ‘Det kunde varit vi’ at Abecita in Borås

Glada Hudik Theatre, in collaboration with photographer Magnus Laupa, will present ‘Det kunde varit vi’ at Abecita Popkonst & Foto in Borås, Sweden. The exhibition opens on 8 October 2026 and will remain on view through 10 January 2027, examining historical experiments conducted on people with intellectual disabilities.

The exhibition opens with a vernissage and photography evening at Abecita on Thursday 8 October at 6.30 p.m. During the event, Laupa is scheduled to discuss the work behind the film associated with the project and the photographs included in the exhibition. The museum’s announcement describes the 8 October programme as the first presentation of the exhibition at Abecita; it was not ready for the venue’s regular 24 September opening programme.

According to the exhibition description, ‘Det kunde varit vi’ takes visitors back to 1922, when the Swedish State Institute for Racial Biology was inaugurated in Uppsala. It addresses the “terrible experiments” carried out on people with intellectual disabilities, using visual material and historical reflection to consider the treatment of those subjected to such practices. The description also frames the project around the importance of understanding this history in the effort to build a more inclusive future.

Laupa’s photographs were made in connection with the film’s production. The museum says that his camera records moments and emotions from the filming, including encounters with the performers and participants. In a first-person statement published by Abecita, Laupa recalls photographing a scene in a dormitory and later finding an image of Ida, one of the people involved in the production. He describes meeting Ida and her friends, who acted as extras, and says that showing that people are “equal and unique regardless of who they are” was the most important aspect of the project.

The exhibition forms part of Abecita Popkonst & Foto’s 2026–27 programme. The museum, located at Herrljungagatan 15 in Borås, presents photography and pop art exhibitions as well as selections from its collection. Its programme for the same period also includes Lena Granefelt’s ‘Natura Obscura’, Jan M Lundahl’s ‘Bruce Springsteen’ and Johan Claesson’s ‘Nuläge’, each scheduled from 24 September 2026 to 10 January 2027.

Abecita’s current exhibition schedule lists weekday opening hours from Tuesday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and weekend hours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; the museum is closed on Mondays. ‘Det kunde varit vi’ will be on view at Abecita Popkonst & Foto from 8 October 2026 until 10 January 2027.
