The Märkisches Museum Witten is opening ‘Hier spielt die Kunst. Sechs Räume. Deine Kunst’ on 22 July 2026, presenting an exhibition built around participation rather than passive viewing. According to the museum’s own exhibition page and newsletter, visitors are invited to paint directly on the walls, build structures, perform in the space, and capture moments photographically. The show runs through 27 September 2026 at the museum in Witten, Germany.
The museum describes the project as one in which audiences do not simply look at artworks but leave their own traces inside the institution. The exhibition is organized across six rooms, each offering different ways to engage with the space and its materials. Malerei, Fotografie, Performance and Architektur are named among the forms of expression available, and the museum says the visitors’ opinions are part of the work itself: without them, the exhibition would not be complete.
‘Hier spielt die Kunst’ appears in the museum’s programme as a new display from 22 July alongside other summer presentations. The institution’s website positions the exhibition within a broader public-facing programme that includes regular guided tours and family-oriented workshops. For this show, the museum has also announced new family tours, specifically aimed at families with children aged six and older.
The exhibition’s emphasis on direct participation distinguishes it from more traditional displays that ask visitors to observe from a distance. Instead, the museum frames the project as an active encounter with art-making, in which experimentation and shared experience are central. The language used in the exhibition materials repeatedly stresses that art is created not only through looking, but through trying things out, playing, and making together.
The museum’s event listing also places ‘Hier spielt die Kunst. Sechs Räume. Deine Kunst’ within a wider schedule of free public programming during the run of the exhibition. On 9 August and again on 23 August, family tours connected to the exhibition are listed, alongside other workshops and public guided visits to the current exhibitions. A family tour is also scheduled for 20 September as part of the museum’s general programme.
The exhibition opens at Märkisches Museum Witten on 22 July 2026 and remains on view until 27 September 2026.
