Lyndsey Ingram will present ‘Affinities’, a solo exhibition of paintings by David Murphy, from 10 September to 7 October 2026 at its 16 Bourdon Street space in London. The exhibition will be Murphy’s first with the gallery and will bring together new works from several strands of his practice, including panels from the ‘Long Ending’ series, large modular paintings and soft-focus abstracts.
The presentation is described as an elegant and refined installation of paintings focused on the relationship between material, structure and perception. Across the works, Murphy explores textile language, Minimalism, nature, science and creativity. The exhibition’s title points to the connections that run between these subjects and to the formal relationships established among the works themselves.
The new paintings from the ‘Long Ending’ series are made through a process in which Murphy uses an etching needle to scratch into panels of casein paint and gesso. This technique gives the surfaces a worked, tactile character while retaining the visual restraint associated with the series. The exhibition will place these panel works alongside larger modular compositions and a group of abstracts rendered in a soft-focus manner.
According to the gallery’s announcement, the surfaces of the paintings are central to the presentation, with a “velvetine” appearance that reflects Murphy’s interest in textiles and Minimalism. The works also relate to large-scale public sculpture projects that run alongside his studio practice, although no further details of those projects were provided in the exhibition announcement.
Murphy’s approach brings together handmade and industrial elements. The gallery describes his practice as materially and visually considered, with an emphasis on the subtle affinities between nature, science and creativity. In ‘Affinities’, those concerns will be articulated through the contrast between scratched and painted panels, modular formats and paintings whose imagery is softened rather than sharply defined.
‘Affinities’ will be on view at Lyndsey Ingram, 16 Bourdon Street, London, from 10 September through 7 October 2026. A private view is scheduled for Wednesday 9 September from 4 to 6pm. The exhibition forms part of the gallery’s programme at its No. 16 Bourdon Street space.
