A painting by Modest Urgell from the Girona Museum of Art’s permanent collection is currently on view in Perpinyà, where it has been included in an exhibition devoted to Joan Miró. 'Marina' is displayed at the Musée d’Art Hyacinthe Rigaud as part of 'Joan Miró. Mallorca, el taller dels somnis', a presentation that opened on 27 June and runs through 31 December 2026.
According to the Girona museum, the Perpinyà exhibition is framed by the twinning between Perpinyà and Palma de Mallorca, an agreement formalized in 2024. The museum’s notice presents the loan as part of that cultural exchange and highlights the presence of Urgell’s work alongside Miró material in the French museum’s galleries.
The exhibition gathers nearly 100 works, spanning painting, sculpture, ceramics, drawings, engravings and lithographs. Among them is 'Marina (Berck)', dated 1873, by Modest Urgell, which belongs to the permanent collection of the Museu d’Art de Girona. The museum’s announcement notes that the piece is travelling to Perpinyà for the duration of the exhibition.
The Girona museum also places the loan in an art-historical context, pointing to Miró’s training at the Escola de la Llotja and the artist’s exposure there to Urgell’s work. The notice describes Urgell’s landscapes as marked by solitary trees, silent tombs and empty beaches, set beneath a horizon line that opens the space into infinity.
'Joan Miró. Mallorca, el taller dels somnis' is on view at the Musée d’Art Hyacinthe Rigaud in Perpinyà until 31 December 2026. The Girona Museum of Art’s announcement states that visitors can see 'Marina' there for the same period.
