Galerie Boisserée in Cologne is presenting 'Sol LeWitt – Open Cube in Color on Color' from June 26 to August 8, 2026, with selected prints by the American artist in the gallery’s studio space. The exhibition opened on Friday, June 26, during the long summer night of the K1 galleries in Cologne, with the gallery saying it welcomed visitors between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. The same date and venue also mark the start of 'ACCROCHAGE', shown in the other gallery rooms alongside the LeWitt presentation.

The gallery’s exhibition material frames LeWitt as one of the key figures of Conceptual Art and Minimal Art, emphasizing the systematic structures that recur throughout his work. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1928 and active in New York until his death in 2007, LeWitt is presented here through a practice rooted in geometric abstraction, mathematical principles and serial variation. Galerie Boisserée’s description points to his use of the square and cube as defining forms, and to the way he repeatedly reworked them through changes in scale, rotation and color.

That focus is especially clear in 'Open Cube in Color on Color', a series of 30 color linocuts from 2003. According to the gallery, each work in the series varies the open cube motif and places it against a contrasting background, producing a vivid and dynamic visual effect. The gallery describes the series as a culmination of LeWitt’s lifelong engagement with geometry, variation and color, and as an extension of his earlier Open Cube sculptures into a two-dimensional graphic format.

LeWitt’s own artistic development, as outlined by Galerie Boisserée, includes an early period marked largely by white works, followed by a striking shift after several years in Italy. The gallery notes that in the early 1980s he settled in Spoleto, where he encountered the frescoes of Giotto and Masaccio. After returning to the United States, he worked in a brighter and broader color range than before. In the Cologne exhibition, that later chromatic phase is central, with color treated not as decoration but as a structural component of the image.

The prints shown in Cologne are part of a wider printmaking practice that the gallery says expanded LeWitt’s work considerably from around 1970 onward. Galerie Boisserée also points to the artist’s long-standing habit of working in series under self-imposed rules, developing new variations from established forms. The gallery’s text links this method to the conceptual approach LeWitt shared with Dan Flavin and Donald Judd, and to his interest in making the artistic process itself visible through repeated, rule-based transformations.

Alongside the LeWitt exhibition, the gallery is showing 'ACCROCHAGE – Neuankäufe und ausgewählte Exponate aus den Beständen' in the other rooms during the same period. The gallery’s English-language page identifies the LeWitt presentation as taking place in the studio and lists the exhibition dates as June 26 to August 8, 2026, at Drususgasse 7-11 in Cologne. Galerie Boisserée’s opening hours are Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., by appointment.
