Paul Gauguin

France, 1848–1903

French painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist who pioneered Post-Impressionism and Symbolism with his distinctive Synthetist style. After renouncing conventional life, Gauguin sought spiritual renewal in Tahiti, creating works that rejected naturalistic representation in favour of emotional and symbolic expression. His use of vivid, non-naturalistic colour and form profoundly influenced modern movements including Fauvism and Expressionism.
