Fukuoka Art Museum will present a solo exhibition by Fukuoka-based artist Mitsue Yamauchi beginning September 8, 2026, as part of the museum’s ‘Contemporary Artist File 2026’ series. Titled ‘Yamauchi Mitsue Exhibition: Chino Ki,’ the show runs through December 20, 2026, in the museum’s second-floor Modern and Contemporary Art Room B.
According to the museum, Yamauchi, born in 1982, has built her practice around the lives and cultures of people who live with the sea. Her work draws on an encounter around 2010 with photographs of ama women standing on the shoreline in the nude, a moment the museum describes as sparking her interest in the vitality of people whose lives are shaped by the ocean’s changing conditions. Since then, she has developed work across drawing, video, and installation.
The exhibition will include video works such as ‘Tsu-Re-Shio’ and ‘Shio Tides,’ alongside ‘Shio Drawings’ made with salt and seawater gathered from different places. The museum also says the presentation will feature photographs and drawings that depict the practices of communities living with the tide, extending Yamauchi’s focus on inherited forms of labor and embodied knowledge.
One element of the exhibition will be a new project shown for the first time. The museum describes this as a work that connects Yamauchi’s past practice with future developments, though it does not give further details in the published material. The exhibition brings together older works and newly introduced material within the same presentation.
The venue has also identified several works associated with the exhibition in its image captions, including ‘Tsu-Re-Shio’ from 2018, ‘Shio Tides’ from 2012 to 2021, ‘A Bubble, Born from One’ from 2024 to 2026, and ‘seawall/Iwate・Kadonohama #1’ from 2016. These captions also note holdings and ownership information for some of the works.
Fukuoka Art Museum lists regular opening hours for the exhibition period at 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with extended hours on Fridays and Saturdays in September and October until 8 p.m. The museum will be closed on Mondays, subject to holiday exceptions. Admission is listed at 200 yen for adults, 150 yen for high school and university students, and free for junior high school students and younger. Related programs include a talk with the artist and an ama diver, scheduled for October 12, 2026, and a gallery talk on October 24, 2026.
