The Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Sorocaba (MACS) will open 'Gravitas' on 15 August 2026, bringing together works by Túlio Pinto and Eduardo Rezende in a project curated by Patrícia Borges. The opening day coincides with Sorocaba’s 372nd anniversary, a timing the museum links to its cultural agenda for the city. The exhibition runs through 15 November 2026 at MACS in central Sorocaba.
According to the museum’s exhibition material, 'Gravitas' is structured as the first act of a broader collaboration between Pinto and Rezende. The project had been shown previously in two sets of works at Piero Atchugarry Gallery in Miami, and the MACS presentation continues that collaboration in Brazil. The museum’s launch announcement frames the show as a dialogue between sculpture and photography, with the title drawn from the Latin term for weight and rigor.
Pinto’s contribution marks a notable shift in his practice. MACS says that 'Gravitas' is the first time the artist has introduced the human body into his sculptural vocabulary. The text describes his work as long grounded in investigations of weight, balance and resistance through materials such as concrete, iron and glass. In this project, those concerns are extended into works that place the body in relation to raw stones, with attention to physical effort, deformation and tension.
Rezende’s large-format black-and-white photographs invert the usual logic of sculpture. Instead of an artist shaping inert matter, the images show raw stones acting on models of different physiques. In the photographs, hands, arms and torsos respond to the contact, and the hand becomes a point of transfer between body and stone. The museum describes the photographs as high-contrast images that present the stone as an active force rather than a passive object.
The exhibition also includes an interactive element at the entrance to MACS, where two stones will be made available to the public. Visitors will be able to touch, lift and feel their weight, extending the bodily experience registered in the photographs into the gallery space. MACS says educational activities will accompany the exhibition during its run.
The museum’s announcement situates both artists within established practices. Pinto is described as a reference point in contemporary Brazilian sculpture, with solo exhibitions in Brazil and abroad, while Rezende’s photography is presented as work that moves between architecture, landscape and spaces in transformation. The MACS text also notes that Rezende has exhibited in Miami and Turin, at Art Basel Miami, and in São Paulo, and that his editorial work has appeared in magazines including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, L'Officiel and Elle.
MACS lists 'Gravitas' as opening with a preview for invited guests on 14 August, from 6 pm to 10 pm, followed by the public opening on 15 August 2026. The exhibition will be on view until 15 November 2026 at Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Sorocaba, Av. Dr. Afonso Vergueiro, 280, Centro, Sorocaba.
