Pilonova galerija Ajdovščina is currently showing an exhibition of Silvester Komel (1931–1983), described by the gallery as one of Slovenia’s key landscape painters of the second half of the 20th century. The exhibition remains open until September 13 and focuses on the artist’s landscapes alongside abstract cosmic spaces, according to the gallery’s announcement.

The exhibition is presented at Pilonova galerija Ajdovščina, which has framed the show as part of an August programme that also includes guided tours and activities for visitors. The gallery’s newsletter says the exhibition explores Komel’s “unique world” of landscapes and abstract spaces, with an emphasis on vibrant colour and light.

In the gallery’s description, Komel’s work moves from personally experienced images of the Karst landscape to abstract, cosmic environments. The text also highlights the role of colour and light in carrying thought, feeling and inner vision, while presenting the painter’s work as rooted in local space yet capable of speaking through a universal visual language.

A guided tour of the exhibition is scheduled for Thursday, August 13, at 5 pm, led by gallery director Tina Ponebšek. The gallery says the public tour is included in the ticket price. Another guided tour of the same exhibition is planned for Thursday, August 27, at 5 pm, this time with curator Tanja Cigoj.

The newsletter also lists further August guided tours linked to the gallery’s permanent displays, including one on Thursday, August 20, at 4 pm on Veno Pilon’s life and work, led by museum educator Ana Vidrih Gregorič, and another at 5 pm that day on the gallery’s collection of Pilon’s friends, led by curator-documentalist Tanja Rijavec. These programmes are separate from the Komel exhibition but form part of the month’s public offer.

A catalogue has also been published with the exhibition. According to the gallery, it includes a foreword by Tina Ponebšek and a text by Tanja Cigoj. The catalogue was designed by Primož Brecelj, with photographs of the works by Boštjan Komel and Primož Brecelj, and is available in the gallery shop.

The gallery’s wider August note also advertises children’s activities and summer reading connected to its own collections and publications, but the main exhibition remains the Komel show, on view in Ajdovščina until September 13.
