The Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama has opened 'MOMAW Collection: Paintings and Sculptures' in its first-floor exhibition space, bringing together works from the museum’s collection under a format that looks at painting and sculpture in relation to one another. The exhibition runs from 4 August 2026 to 11 January 2027 at the museum in Wakayama, Japan, with the entrance hall featuring 國府理’s 'ROBO Whale' for the first time since the work was acquired in 2016.
According to the museum’s exhibition page, 'MOMAW Collection' is a recurring presentation built around MOMAW’s distinctive holdings, especially works connected to artists from Wakayama, and is designed to show Japanese and overseas art from the late 19th century to the present. 'Paintings and Sculptures' is structured around two sections: 'From George Segal’s “Man Walking Along a Brick Wall”' and 'Centered on Painters and Sculptors with Ties to Wakayama'.
The first section uses George Segal’s 'Man Walking Along a Brick Wall' as a point of departure. The museum says it draws attention to features such as human figures and movement, casting or moulding, the relationship between inside and outside, and scene and landscape, using related works to examine the appearance and relationship of sculpture and painting within the collection.
The second section focuses on artists associated with Wakayama who were active in Japan and abroad, including 建畠大夢, 保田龍門, 川口軌外, 村井正誠 and 石垣栄太郎. The museum says the display also introduces works depicting landscapes in Wakayama, placing local connections alongside broader artistic activity in Tokyo, France, the United States and elsewhere.
The exhibition includes paintings and sculptures from the museum’s holdings, among them 中ハシ克シゲ's 'Second Marriage' from 1990, 山本正道's 'Landscape with Ruins' from 1976, 原田要's 'Oval Painting' from 2020, 森有材's 'Pierrot' from 1932 and 村井正誠's 'Kishu' from 1993. The museum’s online notice also identifies the venue as the Wakayama Prefectural Museum of Modern Art, First Floor Exhibition Room A.
Museum information listed with the exhibition gives opening hours of 9:30 am to 5 pm, with admission until 4:30 pm, and a Monday closing day. Admission is 400 yen for adults and 250 yen for university students, with discounted group rates listed in parentheses; children and high school students, people aged 65 and over, and visitors with disability certificates are admitted under the museum’s stated conditions. The ticket is shared with 'MOMAW Collection: Prints and an Art Walk', and the museum notes that admission to this exhibition is also possible with a ticket for 'Summer Museum 16: What if There Were No “Art”' when that show is running.
