Nordiska Akvarellmuseet in Skärhamn will present a major exhibition of Britta Marakatt-Labba from 27 September 2026 to 11 April 2027, marking the first time the museum shows a full exhibition of her works on paper. The museum says the project offers a new view of an artist internationally known for her embroidered narratives, while placing drawings and watercolours alongside selected broderies, sculpture and graphics.
The announcement comes through the Nordic Watercolour Museum’s August newsletter, which frames the exhibition as a rare opportunity to see a major body of Marakatt-Labba’s work beyond the medium that made her widely known. According to the museum, her drawings and watercolours have remained largely outside public view until now, even though they are closely related to her broderies in subject matter and visual language.
Marakatt-Labba’s art is described by the museum as rooted in Sami life close to nature, as well as in themes of colonialism, loss and resistance. The exhibition text also points to imagery that addresses racism, human greed and the loss of grazing land for animals. In the museum’s account, these works on paper share motifs with her stitched pieces, but shift them into a more intimate register.
The exhibition page says the show will include about 70 works, mainly watercolours and drawings, supplemented by a selection of broderies, sculpture and graphic works. The museum adds that the presentation is intended to open a new perspective on Marakatt-Labba’s practice by bringing together media that have mostly been viewed separately.
An opening reception is scheduled for Saturday 26 September at 14:00. The museum also says the exhibition will be accompanied by an extensive programme and a richly illustrated catalogue. The page presenting the show uses the phrase “for the first time” in connection with the museum’s display of Marakatt-Labba’s paper works.
Nordiska Akvarellmuseet’s current programme includes the summer exhibition ‘Asger Jorn & Per Kirkeby’, running until 6 September 2026, alongside selected works from the museum collection and a separate display devoted to Lars Lerin. After the museum closes for an exhibition changeover from 7 to 26 September, the Marakatt-Labba exhibition is set to open in the same venue on 27 September and remain on view through 11 April 2027.
