Nordiska Akvarellmuseet is presenting an exhibition of Britta Marakatt-Labba’s works on paper for the first time, giving the museum a unique opportunity to show this part of her work.
Marakatt-Labba’s drawings and watercolours are almost entirely unknown; these are works that she has so far kept from public view.
The works on paper return to motifs similar to those found in her embroideries, but in a more intimate expression, while the exhibition follows the development of her artistic visual language and the emergence of different aesthetic ideas.
Marakatt-Labba was born in 1951 in Idivuoma in Sápmi and grew up in a reindeer-herding family with Northern Sámi as her mother tongue.
During the 1980s, Marakatt-Labba took part in the Alta protests, which she later portrayed in the well-known work ‘Kråkorna’, made in 1981. An artist talk with Britta Marakatt-Labba and museum director Bera Nordal is scheduled for 3 p.m.
