Fundació Miró Mallorca in Palma will open 'Retrobar Miró. La guspira màgica' on 11 February 2026, presenting a long-running exhibition that reconsiders Joan Miró’s practice through the idea of “retrobar,” or rediscovering what is already familiar. The show is scheduled to remain on view until 25 April 2027 in the institution’s Espai Estrella.
The exhibition takes its point of departure from the earlier show 'La guspira màgica' and develops its argument around a central claim stated on the exhibition page: Miró did not discover, but rather rediscovered his own past, works in progress, discarded materials and lived spaces. According to the foundation, the artist’s creative process was shaped by revisiting memory, revising earlier work, and turning to the everyday as a spark for invention.
The site text frames Miró’s career as a continuous journey marked by repeated returns rather than a linear progression. It describes him moving between the landscape and his intimate workspaces, wandering through studios, visiting cities and countries, and returning again and again to the same references. The exhibition also cites Miró’s remark to James Johnson Sweeney in 1948: “Per a mi, la qüestió és sempre ‘retrobar’; no es descobreix res a la vida.”
The foundation says the exhibition explores how chance encounters, familiar objects and ordinary surroundings acted as catalysts for Miró’s work. It points to found objects, gifts from nature, strange materials, primitive and popular art, people in his orbit, and moments or places that marked turning points. The text also emphasizes that Miró repeatedly reworked images from the past, reinterpreted his vocabulary of signs and even destroyed parts of his own work as part of a process of revision and transformation.
The exhibition page situates these ideas within the artist’s later years in Mallorca, describing the island as a place that allowed him to start again. It notes that Miró’s work is conceived in a perpetual movement of impacts and ruptures, with self-critique becoming part of the creative process. Rather than presenting a settled chronology, the show appears to focus on the back-and-forth motion by which the artist revisited earlier forms and pushed beyond them.
Fundació Miró Mallorca lists the exhibition as including 65 paintings and drawings, 15 sculptures and sculpture maquettes, 111 documents and photographs, 70 objects and four videos.
