The Mayor Gallery has lent numerous works to ‘In the Very Bowels of Changes: Surrealism and Antifascism’ at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, including works by Emmy Bridgwater and Kurt Seligmann.
The exhibition is an adaptation of a presentation held at Lenbachhaus in Munich from October 15, 2024, through March 30, 2025, and was produced in collaboration with Lenbachhaus and Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź.
The Warsaw version explores Surrealism in Poland and wider Eastern Europe, expands its chapter on Prague Surrealism and its treatment of wartime and post-war histories, and adds a Holocaust-studies perspective to the exhibition’s narrative.
The exhibition challenges the widespread preconception of Surrealism as a painting style meant only to represent dreams, fantasies and magic, while questioning the idea of a Surrealist canon through the question, ‘What is Surrealism?’
