National Gallery Prague will take Albrecht Dürer's 'Růžencová slavnost' off public display at the end of August so the painting can undergo a comprehensive restoration. The gallery's August newsletter says the work can be seen "jen do 30/8 2026" — only until 30 August 2026 — in the permanent display 'Staří mistři I' at Schwarzenberský palác in Prague, leaving visitors a final few weeks before conservation begins.
According to the gallery's own announcement of 13 July 2026 on ngprague.cz, the painting will be taken down from Old Masters I in Schwarzenberg Palace on the last day of August, when restoration work starts. The gallery states that the treatment can take up to five years, depending on the condition of the work and the techniques chosen.
The newsletter describes what lies ahead as a comprehensive restoration intervention and "komplexní odborná péče s využitím nejmodernějších technologií", or comprehensive professional care using the most modern technologies. No further technical detail is given. The painting has not yet been restored: the campaign begins only after the display period ends.
Curator-led programmes accompany the final weeks. The gallery's website lists 'O umění zblízka: Růžencová slavnost' with tour dates from 15 to 30 August 2026 at Schwarzenberský palác — added, the gallery says, because of strong demand — with the 19 August slot shown as sold out, alongside 'Očima kurátorů: Růžencová slavnost' on 15 August.
The notice forms part of a broader August communication from Národní galerie Praha that also highlights 'NGP 230' at Veletržní palác, marking 230 years since the gallery's founding with around seventy objects shown in the '1796–1918: Umění dlouhého století' section, and the fourth edition of the biennial 'Ve věci umění 2026', also at Veletržní palác, with free admission to the exhibition and its guided tours. The gallery's website now gives that biennial's closing date as 14 September 2026, a day later than the newsletter states.
For the Dürer, the operative detail is the deadline: 30 August 2026 is the last day to see 'Růžencová slavnost' at Schwarzenberský palác before it goes in for restoration.
