Andi Fischer’s presentation ‘Ship of Fools: umherirren’ brings together new paintings, drawings, and wooden sculptures in von Bartha’s show storage. The presentation is listed as running from September 22 to October 24, 2026, in Basel.
The presentation is inspired by Albrecht Dürer’s illustrations for Sebastian Brant’s ‘Das Narrenschiff’ (1494). The book was printed in Basel, with its woodcuts largely attributed to the young Dürer, and Fischer’s presentation is positioned a few streets from where it first appeared.
Dürer has been a recurring reference throughout Fischer’s practice, and the artist has previously reworked Dürer’s illustrations for ‘Das Narrenschiff’ in his own idiom. Fischer was born in Nuremberg in 1987, lives and works in Berlin, studied at the Universität der Künste Berlin, and works primarily in oilstick and pencil. His paintings, drawings, and sculptures are described as having an apparently childlike directness grounded in a close reading of Western art history.
In the presentation, the fools step out of the printed page and into the room. One work is made with oil stick and pencil on canvas with an artist’s frame, in three parts. ‘Untitled, 2026’ is made of wood and consists of two parts.
