The Suntory Museum of Art in Tokyo will present a special exhibition titled 'Spirit of Spoons' from July 8 to August 30, 2026. The museum describes the project as a look at tableware with artistic and cultural significance, with particular attention to bowls and spoons and their place in Japanese dining culture.
According to the museum’s exhibition page, the show runs at Suntory Museum of Art and will include display changes during the course of the run for conservation reasons. The venue has also set out a series of related programs and a collaborative initiative with 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, linking the exhibition to a broader conversation about objects used at the table and the everyday experiences attached to them.
One part of that collaboration invites visitors to write memories related to tableware and soup on sticky notes and attach them to a display. The museum says the note-writing period runs from July 27 to August 2 at Tokyo Midtown Galleria on the second floor, near Lucien Pellat-Finet, with a later viewing period from August 3 to August 9 in the underground first floor area near Toraya. The source also notes that the museum and 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT are running a year-round reciprocal discount for visitors showing tickets from the other institution’s current exhibition.
The exhibition is accompanied by a special talk program, 'Utsuwa wa ryori' ('Vessels Are Cuisine'), led by culinary expert Yoshiharu Doi. The museum lists two sessions, on July 17 and August 15, both at the Suntory Museum of Art’s sixth-floor hall, with a capacity of 100 participants per session and a fee of 1,300 yen, plus museum admission. Tickets were scheduled to go on sale through the museum’s official online ticket system from June 25 at noon.
The museum’s educational programming also extends online. In partnership with Kids Weekend, Suntory Museum of Art will offer a children’s program titled 'Kitto bijutsukan ni ikitakunaru kaisetsu! Nihon bijutsu no sekai e youkoso! 2026' on July 12 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event is presented as an exploratory online lesson by the museum’s educator and is intended to provide ideas that can also be used for school projects and independent study.
The exhibition title appears on the museum’s site in Japanese as 'Me no gochisō Shokki', with the special page listing the run from July 8 to August 30, 2026. Alongside the main display, the museum is framing the project through visitor participation, public discussion and educational outreach tied to the culture of dishes, soup and the vessels used to serve them.
