The 150th anniversary of Fontanesi’s arrival in Japan is being commemorated, with a focus on production and education in Japan.
From 1876, Fontanesi served for two years as a drawing teacher at the Kōbu Bijutsu Gakkō, where he provided dedicated instruction.
Asai Chū and his other disciples later laid the foundations of Western-style painting. Fontanesi himself was also stimulated by his stay in Japan.
