ICC Annual 2026, with Wu Chi-Yu's "Stories of Celluloid", closes November 8 in Tokyo

"ICC Annual 2026: What Is Left, What Remains, and What We Take on" is in its final weeks at the NTT InterCommunication Center [ICC] in Tokyo, where it closes on November 8, 2026. The exhibition, in the center's Gallery B, opened on June 20 and is curated by Yoshizaki Kazuhiko, Yubisui Yasuko, Kashimada Tomoya and Tada Kaori.

"ICC Annual" is the center's long-term exhibition format for media art and other forms of expression shaped by today's media environment. Launched in 2022, it follows on from the "Open Space" series that ran from 2006 to 2021. This year's edition looks at where history, technology and media meet. According to ICC, technologies such as generative AI now allow information to be produced and circulated at unprecedented speed and scale, with algorithms selecting and reorganising what we see, so that the frameworks deciding what is recorded and shared are themselves changing, and history and memory can be updated or rewritten under political and economic pressure. The exhibition brings together works that reflect on preserving and leaving things behind, on the selection and exclusion built into recording media, on the circulation of images online, and on forms of communication outside the perceptual frameworks of Western modernity.

Wu Chi-Yu is represented by four works from his "Stories of Celluloid" series, made in 2024 and 2025, among them "Terra Nullius Data" and "The Way (After Chen Huo-chuan)". ICC has recently published an interview with the artist on its YouTube podcast. The exhibition also includes Kim YoungEun's three-part "To Future Listeners", Kobayashi Muku's "Tsūchūtai, Teitōki (For Alternative Flight or Fall)", SUGAI KEN's "Pseudo-echoic Room", which visitors experience one at a time, "Resistance Array" by suzueri and Higa Satoru, Hayama Rei's "LYMENA", Rosa Menkman's "Image Remains" and Morinaga Yasuhiro's "Auto-ethnography: HAMAKAI", alongside Gregory Barsamian's "Juggler" (1997) from the ICC collection.

Kobayashi Muku gives an artist's talk on October 24, and a gallery tour is scheduled for November 3.
