First Show From Spain’s National Photography Centre Collection Brings 38 Artists to Centro Niemeyer

The Centro Niemeyer in Avilés, in the Spanish region of Asturias, is showing "Constelaciones fotográficas. Pensar desde las imágenes" (Photographic Constellations: Thinking from Images), the first exhibition drawn from the founding collection of Spain's Centro Nacional de Fotografía (CNF). The show runs from October 2, 2026, to January 31, 2027, in the centre's Photography Room.

Curated by Mónica Carabias Álvaro, director of the CNF, the exhibition brings together 102 works by 38 artists and offers a route through some of the main names, languages and tendencies of contemporary Spanish photography. It includes work by every winner of Spain's National Photography Prize to date, from Gabriel Cualladó, the first recipient in 1994, through Cristina García Rodero, Joan Fontcuberta, Alberto García-Alix, Chema Madoz, Ouka Leele, Isabel Muñoz and Cristina de Middel, to Laia Abril, Jorge Ribalta and the 2025 laureate, Carmela García.

The selection also features Marisa González, winner of the 2023 Velázquez Prize for the Visual Arts, and photographers from younger generations, including Yolanda del Amo, Paula Anta, Mar Sáez, Jorge Yeregui and Jon Cazenave. Together, according to the centre, they form a plural picture of photographic creation in Spain.

The exhibition presents photography as a meeting ground between different generations, sensibilities and ways of looking, and invites new readings of both past and present by highlighting the variety of approaches and concerns that run through contemporary practice.

A book accompanies the show, reproducing the works on display alongside texts by Carabias Álvaro and the writer Lara Moreno. The centre has also published a look back at the exhibition's opening.
