The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery in Toronto will present Fogo, an exhibition by the Los Angeles-based artist Sharon Lockhart, from 24 October 2026 to 21 March 2027. Organised and developed by The Power Plant in partnership with The Vega Foundation, the show brings together work Lockhart made over four summers on Fogo Island, off the coast of Newfoundland.

The exhibition has two parts. Fogo Island Portrait Studio is a series of photographs of the island's young residents. Alongside it, WINDWARD is a film installation featuring the same young people, set against the island's rugged geology, changeable weather and spare landscape. According to the gallery, both bodies of work extend concerns that have run through Lockhart's career: a close study of place, a patient, durational way of looking, and long-term relationships with the people who appear in front of her camera.

WINDWARD was co-commissioned and co-produced by Shorefast/Fogo Island Arts, The Vega Foundation and the National Gallery of Canada, with support from The Power Plant and the Walter Phillips Gallery at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. The exhibition is touring, with support from the Canada Council for the Arts.

Born in 1964 in Norwood, Massachusetts, Lockhart works across installation, photography, film, painting and sculpture. Her practice focuses on landscapes and the people who inhabit them, and is built on lasting commitments to her collaborators and subjects.

Ahead of the opening, The Power Plant is hosting a public talk on 21 October at 7 pm as part of its Connectors: International Speakers Series. The speaker is Zita Cobb, co-founder of Shorefast and founder of Fogo Island Arts, in a talk presented in connection with the exhibition.
