Palazzo Barberini will host Johannes Vermeer’s 'Woman in Blue Reading a Letter' from July 8 to October 11, 2026, in an exceptional loan from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The presentation, titled 'Un Vermeer a Palazzo Barberini', brings one of the best-known paintings by the Dutch master to Rome and will be included in the Palazzo Barberini admission ticket from opening day.
According to the Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica, the display follows the institution’s recent dialogue with major international museums, after its experience with 'Giorgione. Da Budapest a Roma'. The new loan continues that approach through a work that the newsletter describes as one of the high points of Vermeer’s production and among the most celebrated images in 17th-century Dutch painting. The work was made around 1663-1664.
The painting shows a young woman reading a letter in a quiet domestic interior, illuminated by light coming from a window. The institution highlights several features associated with Vermeer’s art: intimacy in everyday life, narrative suspension, and the use of light as a means of constructing both space and emotion. The recurring subject of letter writing in Vermeer’s work is also underlined in the announcement as a way of evoking feelings, relationships, and expectation left to the viewer’s imagination.
The exhibition is curated by the director, Thomas Clement Salomon, and curator Paola Nicita. The museum notes the rarity of Vermeer’s paintings as part of the significance of the loan: just over 30 works are universally recognized, and none are in Italy. On that basis, the arrival of 'Woman in Blue Reading a Letter' is presented as an unusual opportunity to study one of the central figures of European painting at close range.
The presentation will be spread between the Sala Ovale and the Sala Paesaggi. Visitors will be accompanied by digital content offering background on the painting’s history, Vermeer’s technique, and the cultural context in which the work was made. The display will culminate in a dedicated space in the Sala Paesaggi, designed to allow close observation of the painting and its refined execution.
The opening is scheduled for Tuesday, July 7, from 6 p.m., when the public will be able to attend the inauguration and visit the work until 10 p.m., with last entry at 9 p.m. From Wednesday, July 8, the presentation will be open during Palazzo Barberini’s usual hours, Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., with last entry at 6 p.m.
