San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is presenting 'People Make This Place: SFAI Stories', an exhibition that looks back at the history of the San Francisco Art Institute before its closure. On view on Floor 2 from July 26, 2025, through July 5, 2026, the show gathers works by more than 50 SFAI alumni and former faculty from the museum’s collection, together with archival material drawn from the SFMOMA Library and the SFAI Archive.
The exhibition frames the school as the West Coast’s oldest fine art school and emphasizes its influence on creativity and experimentation since the post–World War II era. Artists named by SFMOMA include Ansel Adams, Joan Brown, Miguel Calderón, Imogen Cunningham, Mike Henderson, Candice Lin, and Carlos Villa. The presentation also incorporates a wide range of materials that move beyond finished artworks to show the culture around the school: ephemera from the founding of SFAI’s photography department, posters for 1950s Beat-era galleries run by artist alumni, student newspapers, and flyers from punk and new wave music scenes in the 1970s.
According to the museum, 'People Make This Place' takes its title from a line in the final 2022 commencement speech by faculty member and alumnus Dewey Crumpler. The show is described as a collaborative effort across the museum in partnership with the SFAI Legacy Foundation + Archive. SFMOMA Director of Library and exhibition co-curator David Senior is also highlighted in the exhibition materials, including an interview with SFAI Legacy Foundation + Archive Archivist Becky Alexander that is presented as an in-depth look at the school’s legacy.
The exhibition’s artist list spans several generations and practices, reflecting SFAI’s cross-disciplinary reach. Among the featured names are Ruth Marion Baruch, John Bertolino, Elmer Bischoff, Dorr Bothwell, Jerry Burchard, Jerome Caja, Enrique Chagoya, Benjamen Chinn, Linda Connor, Jay DeFeo, Kota Ezawa, Howard Fried, Jack Fulton, Sonia Gechtoff, Doug Hall, Patricia Harris, William R. Heick, Mildred Howard, David Ireland, Paul Kos, Zig Jackson, Michael Jang, Jess, David S. Johnson, Pirkle Jones, Dorothea Lange, Mike Mandel, Lisette Model, Mary Lovelace O’Neal, Catherine Opie, David Park, Paul Pfeiffer, Mimi Plumb, Deborah Remington, Rigo 23, Stephanie Syjuco, Leo Valledor, Henry Wessel, Minor White, Allen Willis, and Charles Wong.
SFMOMA also notes that former faculty members such as JD Beltran, Angela Davis, and George Kuchar are represented in the archival materials featured in the exhibition and in the adjacent interpretive gallery 'Art in Your Life'. The museum identifies major support for 'People Make This Place: SFAI Stories' as coming from the Pritzker Exhibition Fund in Photography, with meaningful support from the Agnes Cowles Bourne Bay Area Contemporary Arts Exhibition Fund and the Westridge Foundation, and additional support from Joachim and Nancy Hellman Bechtle.
The exhibition appears alongside other SFMOMA programming, but the museum’s exhibition page keeps the SFAI project distinct as a historical survey of a Bay Area institution through collection works and archival traces. Its documented run ends on July 5, 2026, on Floor 2 at 151 Third Street in San Francisco.
