Eltiqa, Arabic for “encounter,” is an artist collective from Gaza City founded in 2000, whose members have developed artistic practices together for more than 20 years. The collective established a dedicated exhibition and workshop space in Gaza City and supports younger generations of artists through workshops, exhibitions and a place to meet and engage in dialogue.
The artworks were collected from various locations worldwide and safeguarded by a trusted network of individuals and institutions, sometimes for many years. Some works produced and exhibited years ago remained with institutions and individuals because returning them to Gaza was difficult, while other works were transported out of Gaza by artists and their networks during the ongoing genocide.
Raed Issa’s practice explores vulnerability, loss and bereavement under siege and war, and his works address the collective trauma of Palestinians expelled from the villages and towns of Palestine. Sohail Salem’s recent practice often incorporates conventional materials available to him and addresses the traumas of war through his first-hand experiences in Gaza. Eltiqa artists include Mohamed Abusal, Abdel Raouf Al-Ajouri, Mohammed Al-Hawajri, Raed Issa, Dina Matar and Sohail Salem.
