The museum presents the exhibition as an all-encompassing artwork created by Kalliokulju with an ensemble.
‘Livets långa näsa, eller Profylaxoratoriet’ is framed as an existential and surrealist journey through the origins of life, the history of maternity care and the power of breathing.
The experience of giving birth and caring for a child is related to social change and intellectual traditions, with the project inspired by the work of pioneering midwife Signe Jansson. Kalliokulju weaves this account of the conditions of life through painting, sculpture, installation, music, singing and theatre.
The ensemble comprises Kalliokulju, composer and musician Ola Paulsen, saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist and composer Martin Küchen, singer and midwife Lotte Ohlander, and students from Halmstads församlings barnkör. A musical performance is scheduled to take place within the exhibition during its final weekend.
Born in 1986 in Bjuv, where she lives and works, Kalliokulju is active as both a visual artist and poet and studied at Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm and Lund University’s writers’ school. Mjellby Art Museum describes its institutional roots in modernism and surrealism through its collection of the Halmstad Group, Thea Ekström and their artistic circles. The exhibition is produced in collaboration with Ystads konstmuseum and supported by Region Halland.
