The Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck in Remagen will open 'Zu den Sternen! Weltraum und Weltflucht seit der Moderne' on 10 July 2026, launching an exhibition that brings together around 100 works from the modern period to the present around the theme of the cosmos as a site of longing, utopia and escape. The opening is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will include speeches, artist talks and an evening reception under the stars.

According to the museum’s announcement, the exhibition considers the sky and outer space as a powerful projection surface for dreams and alternative existence, a theme it connects explicitly to the pressures of global crisis. The show frames space not as a fixed subject but as a shifting field of imagination, where apocalyptic awakening and the loss of boundaries are explored through art from different periods and media.

The museum lists Yael Bartana, Max Ernst, El Lissitzky, Katharina Sieverding, Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Emma Talbot among the artists represented in the exhibition. The broader checklist on the museum’s website extends from historical figures such as Hans (Jean) Arp, Hannah Höch, Joan Miró, Man Ray, Oskar Schlemmer and Alexander Rodtschenko to contemporary positions including Sylvie Fleury, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Bjørn Melhus, Mariko Mori, Thomas Ruff, Mona Schulzek, Katharina Sieverding, Klaus Staeck, Emma Talbot, and John Wood and Paul Harrison.

The museum’s exhibition page places the project in a historical arc that begins in the early 20th century, when the Halley’s Comet scare and rapid changes in technology and knowledge helped intensify artistic projections of the earthly into the cosmos. It also notes that from the 1980s onward, critical voices increasingly questioned the promise of space travel and the idea of finding or creating life on another planet, as awareness of finite resources and human error fed new artistic debates.

For the opening evening, the museum says speeches will take place in the lobby of the new building, followed by an artist talk. The newsletter identifies the speakers as Cornelia Weigand, board member of the Landes-Stiftung Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck, and Dr. Julia Wallner, the museum’s director. The artist talk is billed as featuring Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Mona Schulzek, Bjørn Melhus and John Wood & Paul Harrison, with the reception beginning at 8 p.m. in the foyer and forecourt.

The museum’s announcement also ties the exhibition to a wider July programme. It lists 'Zu den Sternen!' as running from 10 July 2026 to 10 January 2027, and notes supplementary formats including guided tours, workshops, a concert and special events throughout the summer and autumn. A separate visitor note says admission will be free for all under 18s in Rhineland-Palatinate from 26 June to 9 August 2026, including at the Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue, 'Zu den Sternen! Weltraum und Weltflucht seit der Moderne', with contributions by Dr. Julia Wallner, Shelley Harten, Claudia Liebrand, Brygida Ochaim, Torsten Blume, Astrid von Asten and Sylvie Kyeck. The museum says the publication runs to 224 pages in German and English.
