A textile collaboration between the art group LebensWerkGemeinschaft and artists Mascha Fehse and Karen Michelsen Castañón has resulted in a curtain for the Waldraum at the Brücke Museum, which will be presented publicly for the first time on this day. Fehse and Castañón are identified as artists in connection with the collaboration.
The work developed over several months through a shared process of dyeing, painting, sewing, embroidery and printing. During that process, the collaborators gathered stories and traces from the surrounding forest between the museum and the LebensWerkGemeinschaft. Their encounters included trees, animals, beer mats, bark, dogs and other forest beings.
The curtain is made from cotton muslin, on which time, threads, drawings and printed colours are layered and overlaid. Those elements accumulate and connect into a shared textile, allowing the collected stories to continue being told through the fabric.
The resulting work is described as a form of functional art: it serves as the curtain for the Waldraum while also recounting the collaborators’ shared time and the stories they gathered. The project arose within the longstanding collaboration between the Brücke Museum in Berlin and the LebensWerkGemeinschaft.
