Trapholt is inviting people to contribute one or more embroidered apples to ‘Æblehaven’, its next large-scale collaborative artwork, being created by artist Louise Hindsgavl in collaboration with embroiderer Karen Marie Dehn. Each participant embroiders an apple variety connected to their family history, region or country of origin. Anyone who wants to embroider another apple, or perhaps several, is welcome to do so.
To take part, contributors first decide which apple represents them and their roots, then select yarn for the embroidery. Once a contribution is finished, it and the contributor’s story must be registered by 15 October 2026; the contribution must thereafter be delivered or sent to Trapholt as soon as possible.
Hundreds of embroidered apples will be suspended above the sculpture in Trapholt’s new sculpture lounge when the museum reopens in March 2027. Trapholt will be closed to visitors for 14 months while the museum undergoes a major transformation involving construction, rebuilding and new thinking, with a focus on sustainability, better access and more possibilities.
The story of Gustav and Helene is being unfolded through a large ceramic sculpture by Hindsgavl, created to encapsulate the couple’s life on Trapholt’s grounds and to serve as the foundation for the collaborative artwork. In her studio, Hindsgavl has worked from colourful sketches to create the large sculpture.
From 1935 to 1965, the couple ran a large apple plantation on Trapholt’s grounds.
