The Musée d’art et d’histoire (MAH) is inviting the Musée d’art moderne et contemporain (MAMCO) to bring an exhibition devoted to Sylvia Sleigh to the Musée Rath. The exhibition, 'Sylvia Sleigh', is scheduled at the Musée Rath from 4 June to 25 October 2026.
The invitation inaugurates an unprecedented arrangement based on the curatorial freedom granted to MAMCO during the period when its building is closed. Conceived as a space for experimentation and continuity, the format allows MAMCO to continue its programming outside its walls.
Sylvia Sleigh (1916–2010) was a painter of British origin whose figurative work developed between London and New York.
The exhibition brings together a group of emblematic works from the 1960s and 1970s, the period when Sleigh was becoming part of New York’s art scene. Her portraits overturn traditional conventions governing the gaze and the nude, offering a critical rereading of the history of representation.
The project 'Refaire collection' occupies the second level with a polygraphic and contemporary approach, proposing a critical and feminist rereading of the canons of art history while questioning established narratives and the place of women in museums.
