The opening vernissage for ‘Roberto Burle Marx. Modernismo tropical’ is scheduled for Friday, 16 October 2026, at 18:00.
The exhibition is announced as the first in Switzerland to offer a comprehensive view of the work of Roberto Burle Marx. Scheduled from 17 October 2026 to 7 February 2027, it is presented through the artist’s paintings, graphic works, sculptures, landscape projects and other works.
Burle Marx’s groundbreaking contribution to the development of modern landscape architecture went hand in hand with his work as an artist, designer, collector and activist.
A Brazilian artist who lived from 1909 to 1994, Burle Marx is described as an icon in Brazil, while remaining known to relatively few people in Europe. He is also described as having revolutionised landscape architecture in the first half of the 20th century by transferring design principles from painting and music to nature.
His landscape projects incorporated sculptures and three-dimensional or colour-designed wall surfaces, while his paintings included abstracted plants and the play of light in tree canopies. The listed range of his roles extends to painter, graphic artist, sculptor, jewellery designer, stage and costume designer, environmental activist and collector, a multifaceted practice associated with the spirit of the Brazilian avant-garde.
