The opening of 'Maria Jarema. Revolutionäre Kommissarin der Abstraktion' takes place on Monday, 26 October, from 7 p.m. The exhibition is the first comprehensive presentation of Jarema’s work in Germany. It covers all phases of her artistic life and includes paintings, monotypes, sculptures and costumes.
Jarema’s abstract language sought to make rhythm and movement, the spoken word and bodily expression visible in sculpture and painting. She was a sculptor and painter, experimented with printmaking techniques, designed costumes and stage sets for theater and dance, worked as an actress, and wrote art-theoretical texts.
The exhibition includes 'Teatr (Theater)', made in 1950 and held by Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź. It also includes 'Penetracje I (Durchdringung I)', made in 1957 and held by Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź. Another listed work is 'Chwyt (Griff)', made in 1951 and held by the National Museum in Warsaw.
In 1932, Jarema co-founded the Krakow Group, or Grupa Krakowska, with fellow students in protest against nationalist tendencies at the art academy. She advocated women’s unrestricted physical and creative self-determination and wrote manifestos against class society.
