The SCHIRN will present Leonor Fini’s first retrospective in Germany from 23 October 2026 to 21 February 2027.
The exhibition will bring together around 100 works, including paintings, drawings, photographs, costumes, masks and books.
It presents Fini’s oeuvre as situated between dream and myth, masks and costumes. The human body, as an expression of identity, eroticism and power, is a motif that runs continuously through her work.
In works such as ‘Phoebus endormi’ and ‘Train de nuit’, Fini connects the naked body with self-empowerment, mythical subjects and hidden aspects of the unconscious, opening new spaces for sexual identities and gender relations. Other depictions show girls receiving mysterious instruction or performing sexual rites of passage, as in ‘Rasch, Rasch, Rasch, meine Puppen warten’ from 1975.
From the end of the 1960s, Fini developed works with a lighter palette, dramatically charged stage spaces and a Symbolist aesthetic.
