‘Anna Hulačová. Abundantia’ is scheduled to open at the SCHIRN on 30 September and remain on view until early January 2027.
The SCHIRN visited the artist in Vienna and Klučov while she was preparing the exhibition ‘Abundantia’. In Hulačová’s studio, sculptures made from concrete, linden wood and honeycomb inseparably connect female bodies, machines, plants and animals.
The exhibition’s title refers to Abundantia, the Roman personification of prosperity associated with success, wealth and abundance. Its imagery makes visible what is often hidden behind the promise of prosperity: the mostly invisible labour and production processes from which abundance can arise.
A 2026 relief titled ‘Take A Deep Breath’ includes carved branches and alludes to the oxygen-producing function of trees. The exhibition’s second part includes hybrid beings called ‘Alien Bees’, which are half bee and half human. These beings refer to Czech proverbs that are also familiar in German.
The eco-futurist works seem to have emerged from a science-fiction world. In their unceasing activity, Hulačová’s workers are not so unlike machines and animals.
