A curator-led tour titled 'Sigmar Polke: Wachturm III' will take place on 8 October 2026 from 6 to 7 p.m., with visitors meeting at the Stirling-Bau foyer.
As part of the Polke Foundation's 'Athanor NOW' project, Hendrik Bündge and Anne Künzig will discuss Sigmar Polke's experimental use of materials and techniques during the tour, with particular focus on conservation issues.
Polke renders the painting's watchtower motif with reactive chemicals including silver nitrate and cobalt chloride, subjecting the image to change.
The collection record lists the work's materials as silver, silver nitrate, iodide, cobalt-II chloride and synthetic-resin varnish on canvas.
The processual changes in the pigments cannot be predicted in detail, and the painting's final state therefore remains open.
