After more than twenty years in development, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is set to open to the public on December 11, 2026, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum announced in a special email to supporters. The museum said the opening marks a major milestone for the Guggenheim Museum and Foundation, its network of museums, and the broader cultural landscape.
The announcement frames Guggenheim Abu Dhabi as a new chapter in the Guggenheim constellation, joining the institution’s museums in New York, Venice and Bilbao. In the email, the Guggenheim described the project as an unprecedented partnership with the Department of Tourism–Abu Dhabi and emphasized that the museum has been created to present and celebrate contemporary art as a connective resource for audiences in the region and around the world.
According to the museum, the collection and programs will offer a transnational perspective on art since 1960, with a focus centered in the Gulf, West Asia, North Africa and South Asia and extending to all continents. The email also noted notable representation of First Nation and Indigenous arts, positioning the new museum as a platform for a broad and internationally oriented account of recent art.
The building itself is designed by Frank Gehry. The Guggenheim said the architecture includes 30 interior galleries and outdoor exhibition space, and that the museum is situated on the Saadiyat Cultural District in Abu Dhabi. In the institution’s account, the building is intended as a landmark at a meeting point between land and sea and as part of the Guggenheim’s longstanding commitment to innovative architecture.
In the fuller message from Director and CEO Mariet Westermann, the museum described Guggenheim Abu Dhabi as a hub for dialogue, exchange and artistic practice for visitors of all generations and backgrounds. The email also linked the new museum to the legacy of Solomon R. Guggenheim and Hilla von Rebay, who built the foundation’s early collecting vision around the art of their own time.
The opening also completes a key part of the Saadiyat Cultural District, which the Guggenheim called a major precinct of cultural institutions. In the institution’s description, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will join the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, a dedicated teamLab museum and the Abrahamic Family House in the district.
The Guggenheim’s announcement did not provide a public programme for the opening day beyond the date itself, but it did identify December 11, 2026, as the day Guggenheim Abu Dhabi opens its doors to the public in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
