Waldemarsudde is presenting ‘Den underbara färgen – Göteborgskolorismen i nytt ljus’, an exhibition of around 90 works that was first shown in a version at Göteborgs konstmuseum in 2023.
The exhibition presents works by Göteborg colorists Åke Göransson, Ivan Ivarson, Nils Nilsson, Karin Parrow, Ragnar Sandberg and Inge Schiöler in dialogue with paintings by their predecessors and works by several later artists, including Kent Lindfors, Olle Skagerfors and Bente Bjerregaard.
Alongside the better-known Göteborg colorists, the selection highlights less-recognised artists outside the core group, including Märta Taube-Ivarson, Karin Parrow, Ragnvald Magnusson and Erling Ärlingsson. It also presents predecessors such as Tor Bjurström, Gösta Sandels and Karl Isakson, together with the Norwegian painters Henrik Sørensen and Thorvald Erichsen. By including Swedish predecessors, Scandinavian colorists and more artists associated with Göteborgskolorismen than the best-known figures, the exhibition broadens perspectives on a movement whose historiography has long been described as isolated and centred on a small number of influential painters.
The exhibition takes its starting point from Göteborgs konstmuseum’s collections and is supplemented by works by Göteborg colorists and their predecessors from Waldemarsudde’s collections. Waldemarsudde has also added works by Lena Cronqvist from Koster, shown in dialogue with paintings by Inge Schiöler from the same area, as well as contemporary works by Bella Rune and Ebba Svensson.
