Organized by The Newark Museum of Art in collaboration with The Aljira Archive Project, the group exhibition celebrates Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art (1983–2018). It is co-curated by Alliyah Allen, Tricia Laughlin Bloom, and Monisha Bernard.
Spanning from the late 1960s to the present, the exhibition brings to life the groundbreaking history of Aljira: a Center for Contemporary Art, its community, and its transition from an artist-led studio space to a major institution.
Organized thematically and intergenerationally, the exhibition brings together 67 artworks by 46 artists, all of whom exhibited, curated, or collaborated at Aljira.
‘Dreamtime in Newark’ features rarely seen artworks from the Aljira Archive and The Newark Museum of Art’s collection, as well as numerous loans from private and public collections.
The exhibition celebrates the impact of Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art, and its 35-year tenure in downtown Newark (1983–2018).
