Antti Tolvi’s ‘For Organ and Pause’ is now open at HAM’s Space for New Art. The work consists of sound, light and beds that vibrate at a low frequency, and it invites visitors to pause and reflect.
‘For Organ and Pause’ is both an installation and a long-duration performance that begins when the exhibition opens and ends when it closes.
The continuous sound is produced by the angelica archangelica organ and the beds, which go quiet six times during the exhibition. These six pauses provide space for performances composed by Tolvi and performed by him with other musicians.
Tolvi is a sound artist and performer with a background in experimental music. He is fascinated by long-duration performances that challenge our perception of time. A work that goes on for more than three months is impossible to experience from start to finish; instead, visitors can quieten down and pause to savour it for a specific, unique moment.
Space for New Art is HAM’s new platform for versatile art-making and innovative exhibition concepts. The exhibition is curated by HAM curator Milja Liimatainen. During the pauses, Tolvi performs together with other musicians; performances are scheduled for 25 Sept, 10 Oct, 31 Oct, 14 Nov, 28 Nov, 12 Dec and 10 Jan.
