A 3D realization offers rare access to the workplace of one of Finland’s most significant architects. The 3D model can be viewed in a web browser, either directly on the page or in a separate window, and moving through it does not require a separate application.
Juhani Pallasmaa has donated his library of approximately 12,000 works to the Architecture & Design Museum’s collection. Most of the books are still within reach of the 90-year-old architect at Pallasmaa’s architectural office in Helsinki.
A digital record of Pallasmaa’s library preserves and shares the unique atmosphere, scale and details of the space after the physical whole has been dismantled and incorporated into the museum’s collection.
The experience is supplemented by videos in which Pallasmaa discusses building the book collection and the significance books have had for his thinking and his understanding of architecture, as well as the books, writers, artists, architects and friends who have influenced him.
“The 3D model opens the doors of Pallasmaa’s library to researchers, students, and friends of architecture and design,” says Emmi Jouslehto, the Architecture & Design Museum’s technology director.
