The Paul Mellon Lecture ‘Camille Pissarro: On the Road to Impressionism’ will take place on Thursday, November 5, from 6–7 pm at the Cheek Theater. The event will focus on Camille Pissarro and his path toward Impressionism.
Dr. Clarisse Fava-Piz will discuss Pissarro’s transatlantic journey, his early plein air practice in Venezuela, and his role in the development of Impressionism in France. The lecture will examine Pissarro’s transatlantic journey, his early plein air practice in Venezuela, and his role in the development of Impressionism in France. Its subjects therefore include the artist’s movement across the Atlantic, his early work outdoors in Venezuela, and his contribution to the development of Impressionism in France.
These paintings, both formerly part of the personal collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon, highlight the lesser-known story of a cosmopolitan artist. Pissarro was born in the capital of the Saint-Thomas archipelago in the Danish West Indies, now part of the US Virgin Islands. He established himself as the father of French Impressionism.
The lecture will also be livestreamed for people unable to attend in person.
