'Activating Intersections,' a new exhibition by Quilla Constance exploring identity, resistance and social change, is on display in the Main Gallery until 16 January 2027.
The exhibition is described in its launch copy as Constance’s most ambitious solo exhibition to date.
At the centre of the exhibition is a newly commissioned series of monumental oil paintings. The large-scale works reclaim and contest the colonial interiors of British stately homes.
The show also includes the newly commissioned costume installation 'The Grenadiers: New Regiment.' It brings together historic garments worn at Tate Modern and newly commissioned wearable sculptures. The installation is described as bridging historical critique with active civic rebellion.
QC deploys a practice across multiple mediums to disrupt structures that marginalise Global Ethnic Majority, female, LGBTQ+ and working-class identities. The exhibition is presented in direct dialogue with Constance’s 2019 Tate Modern open-studio workshops. Those workshops engaged more than 1,000 participants in addressing systemic cultural stereotypes.
