Manina is presented at Independent 20th Century from 24–27 September 2026, at Booth 203.
The presentation is the first exhibition of Manina’s work in New York since her 1952 exhibition at Hugo Gallery. It frames her return to the country where her artistic vision first emerged.
The presentation includes ‘Acqua alta [High water]’, a 1956 painting made in oil on canvas board. It also includes ‘Sognando Germinante [Dreaming of Germinante]’, an oil painting on canvas from 1971.
Manina, whose name was Marianne Tischler, was born in Vienna in 1918 and died in Venice in 2010. Her exhibition history included the 32nd Venice Biennial in 1964, the 42nd Venice Biennial in 1986, and Hugo Gallery in New York in 1951 and 1952. It also included Palazzo Reale in Milan in 1989, Bevilacqua La Masa in Venice in 1962, 1956 and 1955, the Exposition International du Surrealism at Galleria Cordier in Paris in 1959, Galerie Fürstenberg in Paris in 1957, and Galleria Cocteau – Jardin du Palais Royal in Paris in 1952.
The association existed for only a few years, and its first exhibition was organised around death, a central concern of her painting.
