The inaugural event for ‘In Visita | Carol Rama’ is scheduled for Saturday 3 October 2026 at 17:00 at Palazzo de’ Rossi. Writer, playwright and performer Luca Scarlini will propose a live narrative on Carol Rama’s formation in Turin during the 1950s and 1960s, through encounters, words and images.
The narrative will be followed by contributions from Monica Preti, Maria Grazia Messina and Maria Cristina Mundici. The event is presented as the inaugural event for the fifth edition of ‘In Visita’, which is dedicated to Carol Rama, the Turin-born artist who lived from 1918 to 2015.
Rama is described as one of the most independent and provocative artists of the 20th century, internationally recognized for an autonomous and radical practice addressing the body, desire, illness and identity. The project presents seven of her works from the Gallerie d’Italia–Intesa Sanpaolo collections and a private collection, comprising paintings made between the early 1950s and the first half of the 1970s that represent the evolution of her creative practice.
The works trace Rama’s engagement with abstraction and the Movimento Arte Concreta, or MAC, in the 1950s, followed by the development of an original informal poetics in the 1960s Bricolages, where she combined the stain with discarded objects carrying lived experience. They also include her experiments with bicycle inner tubes in the Gomme works from the ‘Luogo e segni’ series, as well as the stitched-thread works on fabric known as ‘diagrammi’, made in the early 1970s.
The project is curated by Monica Preti, director general of Fondazione Pistoia Musei, and Annamaria Iacuzzi, curator of the 20th-century collections, in collaboration with the Archivio Carol Rama. The 20th-century collections at Palazzo de’ Rossi will remain closed from 21 September through 2 October 2026 inclusive to allow the installation of ‘In Visita | Carol Rama’.
