The announcement names new ceramic works by Roger Capron, Gilbert Portanier and Jacques Poussine. It highlights Roger Capron’s ‘Ceramic Wall Mural,’ made circa 1970 from glazed ceramic tiles and measuring 165 by 215 centimetres.
Gilbert Portanier’s ‘Vase Carré,’ made in 1985, is a glazed-ceramic work measuring 39 by 30 by 8 centimetres. Portanier was a French artist born in Cannes in 1926 and an emblematic figure of Vallauris; from the 1950s onwards, he developed a body of work at the crossroads of painting, sculpture and ceramics.
Nicknamed the ‘Magician of Colors,’ Portanier created unique works with free forms and richly painted surfaces, where figures, arabesques and fantastical motifs unfold in a vibrant palette; for him, ceramics became above all a true pictorial medium.
Jacques Poussine, a French ceramic artist born in Albi, produced work emblematic of post-war French ceramics and notably worked at the Sant Vicens workshops in Perpignan, creating wall panels and glazed lava compositions. The newsletter presents several Portanier vases alongside Poussine tables combining wood and ceramic.
