John Luther Adams’s composition is written for 60 choristers and percussion and performed by four mixed choirs. Within the piece, individual voices resemble bird calls, while the combined voices form complex, layered harmonies. The sound mass intensifies at climactic moments and then disperses like fog.

His interest in wilderness conservation led him to Alaska, where he lived from 1978 to 2014.
